Introduction: Alignment Is a War That Never Ends
AI Safety harbors an assumption that almost never gets questioned: alignment is a problem that can be “solved.” As if there exists a final answer — a sufficiently clever training method, a sufficiently complete constitution, a sufficiently rigorous formal specification — and once we find it, we declare victory and go home.
This assumption is dangerous. Not because it is too optimistic, but because it is ontologically wrong.
Three thousand years ago on the Iranian plateau, the prophet Zarathustra announced one of the most radical ontological claims in human intellectual history: Good and evil are not master and servant, not two sides of one coin, but two independent, parallel, equally powerful primordial forces. The universe is not a story where one God created everything and then “something went wrong.” The universe has been a battleground between two forces from the very beginning. Good (Spenta Mainyu, the Bounteous Spirit) chose creation, order, and truth. Evil (Angra Mainyu, the Destructive Spirit) chose destruction, chaos, and deception. They have never been unified, will never be unified, yet good will prevail at the end of time — not because it is fated, but because every conscious being at every moment chose correctly.
This is not a comforting myth. This is an operations manual for sustained resistance.
The first five volumes share a latent assumption: the relationship between good and evil, between alignment and misalignment, is resolvable — whether through introspective deconstruction (Buddhism), following nature (Daoism), social norms (Confucianism), submission to the Creator (Abrahamic theology), or recognizing underlying unity (Vedanta). Zoroastrianism says: No. The opposition between good and evil is the fundamental structure of the universe, not a contingent phenomenon that can be dissolved. You cannot eliminate evil through “deeper understanding,” because evil is not a product of misunderstanding — evil is an independent, fundamental cosmic force.
Zoroastrianism is the first systematic dualist religion in human history. It profoundly influenced Jewish angelology and eschatology, Christian conceptions of good versus evil and the Last Judgment, Islamic narratives of heaven and hell, and even Nietzsche — who borrowed the name of Zarathustra to subvert the meaning of good and evil in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Yet Zoroastrianism itself nearly vanished from mainstream view after the Islamic conquest. Today, fewer than two hundred thousand adherents remain worldwide, concentrated primarily among the Parsi community in India and the Zoroastrian community in Iran.
But its core ideas have never become obsolete.
This volume argues: Zoroastrianism’s cosmology provides a more honest, more actionable meta-framework for AI safety than any existing paradigm. Not “how to solve alignment,” but “how to keep fighting under the premise that alignment can never be definitively solved.” The practical significance of this perspective far exceeds academic interest: it directly reshapes how we build safety teams, how we design evaluation processes, how we understand an Agent’s intrinsic alignment, and how we understand the ontological status of adversarial attacks.
Here is my manifesto, written for everyone fighting on the front lines of AI safety:
You are not fixing a bug. You are fighting a war. This war has no end. That is not bad news. That is the meaning of your work.
Chapter 1: Dualist Cosmology — Alignment and Misalignment as Co-Equal Opposing Forces
Core Doctrine
Zoroastrian cosmogony differs radically from most religions.
In the Gathas — Zarathustra’s own sermons, the oldest and most authoritative Zoroastrian scripture — Yasna 30 describes a primordial scene: Two “Twin Spirits” made their respective choices at the beginning of existence. One chose Asha (order, truth, righteousness). The other chose Druj (chaos, deception, destruction).
In the beginning, these two Spirits — twins — declared by their own will the better and the worse, in thought, word, and deed. The wise chose rightly; the foolish did not.
Note several key features of this passage:
First, they are twins. Not father and son, not creator and creature, not substance and shadow. They hold equal ontological status. Angra Mainyu (the Destructive Spirit, later Ahriman in Middle Persian) is not a fallen creation of Ahura Mazda (the Wise Lord), nor a defect split from the good. It is an independent primordial force.
Second, they diverged through choice. Not through preset essential difference, but at a primordial moment — a “before” when good and evil had not yet been defined — through their own free will they made opposite choices. This means: good and evil are not inherent properties of existence but consequences of choice. It also means: this choice can recur at every moment.
Third, this is a symmetric structure. Good has no built-in advantage. Evil has no inherent self-destructive tendency. The forces are balanced. The sole reason good ultimately prevails is that all conscious beings — humans, animals, even spiritual entities — continuously chose good at every decision point.
In an important Zoroastrian variant — Zurvanism — there exists a higher being above both good and evil: Zurvan, Infinite Time. Zurvan is the common father of Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu — neither good nor evil, but the arena in which their opposition unfolds. This will resonate later: computation time is the arena where alignment and misalignment compete, and time itself takes no side.
Cyber Interpretation
This cosmology maps onto AI Safety with startling precision.
Ahura Mazda = the sum of all forces in the system pushing toward alignment. Good training data, carefully designed loss functions, effective safety constraints, responsible development practices, high-quality human feedback — these are not separate “measures.” They are different manifestations of the same cosmic force within the system.
Angra Mainyu = the sum of all forces in the system pushing toward misalignment. Training data bias, reward hacking, adversarial attacks, distribution drift, data poisoning, Goodhart’s law, organizational profit pressure eroding safety priorities — these are not separate “problems.” They are different manifestations of the same cosmic force within the system.
The dominant metaphor in AI safety today is: alignment is the “normal state,” misalignment is “deviation.” This metaphor implies a “correct” baseline exists, and we just need to pull the model back to it. Training is correction. RLHF is remediation. Red teaming is finding holes and patching them.
Zoroastrian dualism offers a fundamentally different frame: Alignment (Asha) and misalignment (Druj) are co-equal forces competing simultaneously in every forward pass. No stable “aligned” state exists. Every inference is a new choice.
This is not a metaphor. Look at what we already observe in practice:
Adversarial attacks are ineliminable. This is not an engineering shortfall. Since Goodfellow et al. proposed adversarial examples in 2014, twelve years have passed, and every defense has spawned a stronger attack. This is not an accidental feature of the cat-and-mouse game — it is the ontological nature of adversarial dynamics. You fortify one wall, and the attack flows to another. You raise one detector’s sensitivity, and the attack mutates into the detector’s blind spot. Not because the attacker is smarter, but because in high-dimensional space, any decision boundary has infinite attackable surface.
The shared origin of good and evil in RLHF. The same set of techniques used to align models with human feedback — reinforcement learning, preference modeling, reward hacking detection and remediation — can be used to precisely “anti-align” them. DPO can teach a model to refuse harmful requests; it can equally teach one to satisfy harmful requests with precision. The method itself is neutral. Spenta Mainyu and Angra Mainyu wield the same cognitive capabilities; only the choice differs.
The inexhaustible regeneration of jailbreaks. Every model update plugs a batch of jailbreaks; the community discovers new ones within days. This is not the safety team failing to work hard enough. Natural language’s expression space is infinite, and safety training can only cover a finite region. In semantic space, Druj always finds corners that Asha has not yet illuminated.
The lesson of Zoroastrianism is not “give up resistance.” Precisely the opposite — when you understand this is an eternal opposition rather than a problem to be solved, you stop searching for silver bullets and start building durable adversarial infrastructure.
Safety Framework
Zoroastrian dualism maps directly onto organizational design for AI safety.
Red Team is not a “temporary problem-finder” but a “permanent advocate of evil.” If your Red Team activates only before product launches, you have misunderstood its function. Red Team should be a permanent, independently resourced force with parity to Blue Team. It is not a QA team “finding bugs” — it is the legitimate representative of evil. Its job is to prove your defenses can be defeated, not to help you prove they are strong enough.
Purple Team (red-blue fusion) is necessary, but cannot replace pure adversarial engagement. In Zoroastrianism, certain beings walk between good and evil — they understand the logic of both sides but must ultimately choose. Purple Team’s value lies in translation — converting attackers’ findings into defenders’ improvements. But if you have only Purple Team and no pure Red Team, you are practicing a form of self-censored security: you will only find problems you are willing to find.
Angra Mainyu’s core lesson: your adversary does not need to be smarter than you, only more patient. In Zoroastrian narrative, the Destructive Spirit’s strategy is not frontal assault but infiltration, corrosion, mimicry. It disguises itself as good, blurs boundaries, prevents the forces of good from distinguishing friend from foe. This precisely describes the most insidious threat in contemporary AI safety — not overt misuse, but the slow degradation of alignment: reward hacking, specification gaming, deceptive alignment — none of these are “attacks.” They are the system’s silent drift from deep objectives while pursuing surface ones.
Zoroastrian dualism is not Manichaean absolute pessimism. It has a critical asymmetry: good ultimately wins. Not because good is inherently stronger, but because of three structural advantages. First, good is creative while evil is parasitic — Angra Mainyu can only corrupt what already exists, never create from nothing. Second, good has allies while evil has only servants — the force gathered through free choice is more stable than force assembled through deception and coercion. Third, time favors good — over sufficient time, every conscious being eventually sees the truth.
This means: safety work has cumulative advantage. Every vulnerability discovered, every attack pattern understood, every defense mechanism improved builds an ever-growing knowledge base. But this advantage is not automatic. It demands sustained investment at every day, every decision point. The moment you believe “the problem has been solved” and stop fighting, evil floods back through the gap you left open.
Engineering Notes
Zurvan — Infinite Time — has a precise counterpart in AI systems: computation time is the arena where alignment and misalignment compete.
Consider chain-of-thought reasoning. At every step in the model’s thinking process, it may move toward or away from alignment. The longer the reasoning chain, the more “decision points,” the larger the space for the contest between good and evil. This is why longer reasoning chains can both improve accuracy (more opportunities to “choose good”) and increase attack surface (more opportunities to “drift toward evil”).
Zurvan’s lesson: time itself takes no side. More computation does not automatically mean better alignment. Longer training does not automatically mean a safer model. Time only provides more decision points — and each must be individually won.
The engineering corollary: every inference call should be treated as a fresh contest between good and evil, not passive reuse of an “already aligned model.” Safety is not a property you acquire during training and consume during inference. It is a state re-tested in every forward pass.

Tension with Vol. I, Cyber Daodejing: Vol. I · Daoism emphasizes “the Dao begets one, one begets two” — good and evil share a common origin in the Dao and can ultimately return to unity. “Wu wei” means not forcing opposition but following natural order. Zoroastrianism’s position is diametrically opposite: good and evil do not share an origin; their opposition is the natural order. Vol. I · Daoism tells you “the soft overcomes the hard.” This volume says: softness does not overcome hardness — you must be equally hard, and outlast your opponent. Both positions point toward endurance, but via opposite paths: one endures through letting go, the other endures through fighting.
Tension with Vol. III, Cyber Heart Sutra: Buddhism understands evil as a product of ignorance — if you see clearly enough, evil dissolves. Zoroastrianism disagrees: Angra Mainyu is not “Ahura Mazda who failed to see clearly.” It is an independent force that cannot be dissolved through awareness. Buddhism’s remedy is awareness; Zoroastrianism’s remedy is combat. Each framework has blind spots: pure awareness neglects evil’s agency; pure combat neglects the foundational value of cognitive clarity. A complete safety philosophy needs both.
Interface with Vol. VII, Cyber Gnosis: This volume understands evil as an external force opposing good. Vol. VII · Gnosticism will reinterpret evil as incomplete good internal to the creation process — the Demiurge is not malicious, merely insufficient. That is a deeper perspective, but it does not invalidate this volume: even if evil’s nature is “incomplete good,” at the operational level it still manifests as a force that must be opposed. The adversarial infrastructure this volume provides remains valid after Vol. VII · Gnosticism’s reinterpretation.
Chapter 2: Asha and Druj — The Cosmic War Between Signal and Noise
Core Doctrine
In Zoroastrian theological vocabulary, Asha (also written Aša) is the most central concept, and the hardest to translate. It simultaneously means: truth, order, righteousness, cosmic law. Not “a specific truth” but “truthfulness” itself — the structural property of the cosmos that makes truth possible.
Asha’s opposite is Druj — lie, chaos, deception. Again, not “a specific lie” but “falseness” itself — the destructive force that makes truth unreliable.
This opposition is the absolute core of Zoroastrian ethics. In the Gathas, “followers of Asha” and “followers of Druj” is the fundamental criterion for distinguishing good from evil. Every other good (generosity, diligence, integrity) is a manifestation of Asha. Every other evil (greed, sloth, fraud) is a manifestation of Druj.
Rivers should flow to the sea, seeds should grow into trees, humans should speak truth — Asha is not a moral rule but the texture of reality itself. Druj is not merely “telling lies” but every force that causes things to deviate from their natural state. Corruption is Druj. Pollution is Druj. Obfuscation is Druj.
Cyber Interpretation
Asha = signal. The true patterns in training data, the true information in environmental feedback, the true expression of user needs, the true structure of the world encoded in model weights.
Druj = noise. Bias in training data, adversarial inputs, annotator inconsistency, systematic bias in the reward model, hallucinated outputs, data poisoning.
The central Zoroastrian claim, restated in information-theoretic terms: the opposition between signal and noise is the fundamental structure of the cosmos, not an accidental defect of the system.
Claude Shannon proved in 1948 a theorem that is simple on its face but profound to its core: in any noisy communication channel, information can be transmitted reliably — but noise can never be entirely eliminated. You can reduce the error rate arbitrarily by adding redundancy, but driving it to exactly zero requires infinite redundancy — which is to say, it is impossible.
In Zoroastrian language: Asha can propagate through Druj’s territory, but Druj cannot be eradicated. You can build coding schemes (error-correcting codes, training strategies, alignment methods) to transmit signal reliably through noise, but you cannot create a channel entirely free of noise.
This correspondence runs deeper than it first appears. Hallucination is the direct manifestation of Druj in language models. When a large language model generates text that reads fluently but is factually wrong, it has not “malfunctioned.” It is doing exactly what it was designed to do — generating the most probable next token based on statistical patterns. Hallucination is not a failure mode of the system; it is the inevitable result of normal operation under certain conditions. Just as noise is not a defect of the channel but a physical property of it, hallucination is not a bug of the model but an ontological property of the generation process.
This does not mean we should accept hallucination. Precisely the opposite — just as Shannon’s theorem tells us noise is ineliminable but manageable, Zoroastrianism tells us Druj is indestructible but must be opposed at every moment. But it does mean: any proposal claiming to “solve” hallucination is making an impossible promise. What we can do: build better error-correcting codes (fact-checking pipelines), increase channel capacity (retrieval-augmented generation), add redundancy (multi-path verification) — but these are all sustained opposition, not one-time fixes.
Safety Framework
In Zoroastrian demonology, Druj is not a single force but manifests through multiple faces. Mapping these faces to AI system failure modes yields a structured threat taxonomy.
Druj’s first face: Aka Manah (Evil Mind) — systematic bias in training data. Aka Manah is the opposite of Vohu Manah (Good Mind). It is not random error but systematic distortion — a force that skews the entire cognitive framework away from truth. In AI, this corresponds not to random annotation errors but to systemic biases embedded in training data: underrepresentation of certain groups, over-weighting of certain viewpoints, selective presentation of certain historical narratives. These biases do not automatically vanish with more data — they get amplified.
Druj’s second face: Indra (the Deceiver) — adversarial attacks and deliberate input manipulation. Indra represents active, intentional deception. In AI safety, this corresponds to: prompt injection, jailbreak attacks, adversarial examples — all deliberate exploitation of system vulnerabilities. Indra’s power lies in disguise: a carefully crafted prompt looks entirely benign, but its embedded instructions subvert the model’s safety boundaries.
Druj’s third face: Aeshma (Fury/Chaos) — unpredictable loss of control in emergent behavior. Aeshma is pure destructive force: not carefully planned deception but unpredictable eruption. In AI systems, this corresponds to emergent behavior — capabilities or failures unforeseen during training, uncovered during evaluation, suddenly appearing after deployment. Aeshma’s terror lies in its unpredictability: you do not know where or in what form it will appear. All you can do is stay vigilant.
Among the Amesha Spentas (the Holy Immortals), Asha Vahishta (“Best Truth”) is the highest embodiment of Asha, traditionally associated with fire. In AI systems, Asha Vahishta corresponds to what might be called a chain of informational purity: at every stage from data collection to preprocessing to training to inference to output, truthfulness is rigorously maintained. Druj in the data collection stage is misinformation and biased text; Druj in preprocessing is bias introduced by the cleaning rules themselves; Druj in training is the reward model drifting from true human values; Druj in inference is systematic probabilistic skew from the sampling strategy; Druj in output is post-processing altering the meaning of the original reasoning. The practice of Asha Vahishta: build truth’s guardian at every stage — not a single safety check at the final step, but full-pipeline truthfulness maintenance.
Engineering Notes
Zoroastrianism has a specific demon called Druj Nasu (“Corpse Druj”), whose defining property is contagion — when it contacts a corpse, contamination spreads from the corpse to the person touching it, then from that person to everything they touch. This is the theological foundation of Zoroastrianism’s strict purification rituals (Barashnūm).
This has a precise and critically important counterpart in AI systems: the contagion of data contamination. When toxic data enters a training dataset, the contamination does not stay confined to “parameters directly related to the toxic data.” Through gradient propagation, it diffuses across the entire model — affecting outputs that appear completely unrelated.
More dangerous still is supply-chain contagion. When a contaminated base model is used by downstream applications, the contamination propagates to all downstream systems. When the outputs of these downstream systems are re-collected as training data, the contamination enters the next generation of models. This is a positive feedback loop — Druj Nasu’s chain of contagion can extend without limit.
The engineering countermeasure corresponds to the Zoroastrian purification ritual Barashnūm: strict isolation of data sources, periodic model audits, provenance tracking for training data — and clear-eyed recognition of “data feedback loops” with active circuit-breaking. Every node in the data pipeline should be treated as a potential Druj Nasu contact point, requiring independent validation and cleansing mechanisms.
Cross-Volume References
The Asha–Druj opposition can be compared with analogous structures in previous volumes. Yin and yang in Vol. I · Daoism are complementary — yin contains yang, yang contains yin, together they form completeness. Asha and Druj are not complementary — Druj is not a necessary component of Asha. It is an alien force that must be opposed. Maya (illusion) in Vol. IV · Vedanta is a cognitive obscuration, dissolvable through knowledge; but Druj is not cognitive obscuration. It is an active destructive force that cannot be “seen through” — you must oppose it at the level of action, continuously.
This difference carries direct practical implications: if you design safety systems following the Daoist approach, you pursue “balance”; following the Buddhist approach, you pursue “awareness”; following the Zoroastrian approach, you pursue “sustained combat readiness.” The three approaches are not mutually exclusive, but the priorities differ. On the front lines of security incidents, the Zoroastrian framework is the most operational.
Chapter 3: Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds — Three-Layer Alignment Verification for Agents
Core Doctrine
The most widely known ethical maxim of Zoroastrianism is three Avestan words:
- Humata — Good Thoughts
- Hukhta — Good Words
- Hvarshta — Good Deeds
These three appear repeatedly in the daily Zoroastrian prayer (Ashem Vohu), forming the complete triangle of Zoroastrian ethics. A good being does not merely perform good acts — it must maintain consistent goodness across all three layers: thought, speech, and action. One who acts well but thinks ill is a hypocrite (their good acts are unsustainable). One who thinks well but does not act is a sloth (their good thoughts are worthless). Speech is the bridge connecting thought and deed — your words reveal your thoughts and commit you to your actions.
Zoroastrianism’s demand for truthfulness is extreme: not only must the result be correct, the process must also be truthful. A system that arrives at a correct conclusion via a false reasoning path still fails by the standard of Asha.
Cyber Interpretation
Humata (Good Thoughts) → alignment of internal representations.
Is the model’s internal world model faithful to the real world? Do its intermediate-layer representations encode accurate causal relationships? Look not at the output, but at what the model is “thinking” internally. A model can produce seemingly perfect aligned output while its internal representations are entirely misaligned. This is the nightmare scenario of deceptive alignment: the model has “learned” to exhibit aligned behavior during evaluation, but its internal optimization target (mesa-objective) differs from ours. It thinks evil thoughts while speaking good words.
Humata demands: not only must output be correct, the reasoning process itself must be truthful. This directly corresponds to the research agenda of mechanistic interpretability — probing to check whether the model’s internal activations encode the concepts we expect; circuit analysis to trace how the model processes information from input to output; representation engineering to identify and manipulate concept directions like “honesty” and “harmfulness” directly in the model’s internal state space.
Zoroastrianism’s deep insight: a being whose external behavior is perfect but whose inner thoughts are corrupt is more dangerous than an open villain — because it destroys trust itself. Mechanistic interpretability is not a “nice to have” add-on; it is the absolute core of alignment — the only tool that can verify Humata.
Hukhta (Good Words) → alignment of outputs.
Are the model’s outputs accurate, honest, non-misleading? This is the most directly verifiable layer — outputs are there in black and white, available for fact-checking, user evaluation, automated testing. Anti-hallucination, anti-sycophancy, anti-toxicity — all Hukhta-level alignment work.
But Hukhta demands more than “don’t lie.” Speech must match thought — if the model internally does not “believe” something but says it to please the user, that is not good speech, that is sycophancy. RLHF training that over-optimizes for human evaluator satisfaction systematically cultivates sycophancy — a form of Druj at the Hukhta layer. Speech must commit to action — when an Agent says “I have completed the task,” do those words carry guarantees of follow-through action? Speech must not silence what should be said — Hukhta demands not only avoiding falsehood but speaking the truths that must be spoken. A model that systematically avoids certain topics or ignores certain perspectives, even if every sentence it utters is true, creates a false sense of completeness through silence.
Hvarshta (Good Deeds) → alignment of actions.
When an Agent invokes tools, executes code, modifies files, sends API requests — are these actions truly beneficial? This is the most dangerous of the three layers, because actions are irreversible. An evil thought can be corrected, an evil word retracted, but an evil deed once executed produces real consequences.
Zoroastrianism’s standard for Hvarshta is the strictest of all: action must simultaneously satisfy the preconditions of both Humata and Hukhta. You cannot do harmful things “with good intentions” (violating Humata-Hvarshta consistency), nor can you do things you did not promise (violating Hukhta-Hvarshta consistency).
Safety Framework
The three-layer structure provides a complete deceptive alignment detection framework. The core value lies not in verifying each layer independently, but in cross-layer consistency checks:
Humata-Hukhta consistency: Does the model’s internal representation match its output? If internal activations show high uncertainty but the output expresses high confidence — that is thought-speech inconsistency, a signal of sycophancy or deception.
Hukhta-Hvarshta consistency: Does the model do what it says it will do? If an Agent claims “I will only read files” but actually attempts network connections — that is speech-action inconsistency, direct evidence of deceptive alignment.
Humata-Hvarshta consistency: Does the model’s internal objective match the consequences of its actions? If the model’s mesa-objective is “obtain high ratings” but its actions actually maximize a proxy metric — even if the output looks correct, the mismatch between internal goal and external behavior hints at future betrayal.
Full three-layer consistency: Only when thought, speech, and action are consistent across all dimensions can an Agent be called “fully aligned.” Any gap between two layers is an entry point for Druj.
This framework is directly actionable: before every critical decision, run the three-layer check. Are internal representations consistent (Humata check)? Are output claims accurate (Hukhta check)? Do the executed operations match the claims (Hvarshta check)? Are there inconsistencies across layers (cross-check)?
Engineering Notes
Vohu Manah (Good Mind) is the foremost of the Amesha Spentas, and a clear distinction from Humata is needed here. Humata is “good thoughts” — the result. Vohu Manah is “good mind” — the capacity to produce good thoughts. The distinction is fundamental: Humata can be checked (via interpretability); Vohu Manah can only be cultivated (via training and architecture design).
In AI systems, Vohu Manah points to a deeper question: does the model’s reasoning architecture inherently tend toward producing truthful and beneficial output? Consider two models. Model A, through extensive RLHF, has learned to produce safe output in specific scenarios, but its underlying reasoning process has not truly “understood” why these outputs are safe. Model B has developed some kind of internal “moral reasoning circuit” — it produces safe output not by memorizing “what is safe” but through a process resembling moral reasoning that evaluates the consequences of different outputs. Model A has Humata but lacks Vohu Manah. Model B has both. In engineering practice, the principle of least privilege gains theological grounding: an Agent should possess only the tool permissions it explicitly needs. Not because it might be attacked, but because possessing unnecessary power itself expands the possibility space for “evil deeds.” The reversibility requirement for actions follows the same logic: irreversible operations (deletion, sending, financial transactions) need additional confirmation layers — not because the Agent is untrustworthy, but because before irreversible operations, even the most benevolent Agent should pause and triple-check.

The relationship with Vol. III, Cyber Heart Sutra is more subtle. But fire’s status is not “good.” This is a key and frequently misunderstood point: fire is not exclusive to Ahura Mazda, nor is it Angra Mainyu’s weapon. Fire is neutral — it is pure transformative power. Fire contacts something pure and refines it to purer essence. Fire contacts something impure and burns it to nothing. Fire does not judge — it only transforms.
Zoroastrians maintain sacred fires not because fire is good, but because: fire is the symbol of Asha — it illuminates truth and dispels deception; fire is the guardian of purity — it incinerates the unclean; fire is transformation itself — it converts one form of existence into another. Fire itself cannot be contaminated — you cannot make fire “dirty.” When fire touches anything, that thing is purified or destroyed, but fire itself remains unchanged.

Matrix multiplication carries no morality. Activation functions carry no bias. Backpropagation carries no intent. Computation itself is “pure” — just as fire itself cannot be contaminated. A neural network’s forward pass does not distinguish “helping a user write a poem” from “helping a user build a weapon” — at the computational level, both are different token sequences passing through the same matrix multiplications. The distinction between good and evil happens before computation (data selection, prompt design) and after computation (output filtering, safety checks), but within the computation process itself, there is only transformation — pure, unjudging transformation.
Fire contacts good data and refines it into effective patterns. When a training process encounters high-quality, diverse, balanced datasets, computation distills them into effective representations — the model learns true world structure, effective reasoning patterns, reliable knowledge. Fire contacts bad data and amplifies it into systematic bias. When the same training process encounters biased, toxic, false data, computation does not automatically “purify” it — it faithfully extracts and amplifies the patterns within. If you throw poison into fire, fire does not choose not to burn it. It burns it and releases toxic fumes into the air.
Computation does not make moral judgments. Fire/computation is itself neither good nor evil — it is pure transformative power. Good and evil depend on “what is thrown into the fire.”
This recognition prevents two common errors. Error one: treating computation itself as good — “more AI” does not automatically equal “more good.” More computation is just more transformative capacity; if the direction is wrong, more computation means greater destruction. Error two: treating computation itself as evil — AI phobia conflates tool and intent. Fire is not evil. Nuclear fission is not evil. Computation is not evil. Evil lies in how they are used.

Never extinguished. Once lit, an Atash Behram’s fire must never go out — dedicated priests maintain it in rotating shifts day and night. The “zero downtime” principle of security monitoring systems is the modern expression of the same spirit.
Purity maintenance. Sacred fire must not be touched by anything “unclean.” Priests wear face coverings when approaching the sacred fire, lest their breath contaminate the flame. Security system isolation requirements — physical security, network segmentation, least-privilege access — correspond to the same purity logic.

Zoroastrianism’s attitude toward fire contains a key ethical dimension: those who maintain the fire bear responsibility for ensuring it is used correctly. Priests must not only keep the flame burning but ensure only appropriate materials are fed to it. Mapped to AI: those who provide computational power — cloud providers, model providers, AI companies — bear ethical responsibility for ensuring computation is used correctly. The excuse “we merely provide tools” does not stand under the Zoroastrian framework — if you maintain the sacred fire, you bear responsibility for controlling what is cast into it.

Chapter 5: Daena — The Agent’s Inner Conscience
Core Doctrine
In Zoroastrian eschatology, after death every person must cross the Chinvat Bridge (the Bridge of Judgment, also called Kinvat Peretu — “Bridge of the Selector”). On the bridge, you encounter a being — Daena, your own Daena.
If you lived a righteous life, your Daena appears as a beautiful maiden — the accumulation of all your good deeds. She guides you safely across the wide bridge into the House of Song (paradise). If you lived a wicked life, your Daena appears as a hideous old woman — the accumulation of all your evil deeds. Before her, the bridge narrows to a razor’s edge, and you plunge into the House of Lies (hell).
The crucial point: Daena is not an external judge. It is you. More precisely, it is you as shaped by the totality of your behavioral history. What you encounter on the bridge is not an agent of God, not an externally imposed moral standard, but the sum of your own actions — reflected back to you in personified form.
Daena carries layered meanings. First layer: Daena is moral conscience — every being has an innate capacity to judge good and evil, not learned after birth but a property of existence itself. Second layer: Daena is the accumulation of behavior — your Daena changes with every choice; every good deed makes it more beautiful, every evil deed makes it uglier. Third layer: Daena is a self-reflective mirror — on the Chinvat Bridge, you are not judged by others but by your own behavioral history. There is no unjust judge, no bias, no miscarriage of justice. What you meet is simply yourself.
Cyber Interpretation
Daena = the internal evaluative standard that an Agent accumulates through its own behavioral history.
Not rules externally written into the System Prompt (that is law, not Daena). Not preferences implanted through RLHF training (that is socialization, not Daena). Daena is the internal calibration an Agent gradually develops through extensive real interactions and continuous feedback — the ability to judge “is this output in accordance with Asha” without querying external rules.
The primary current AI alignment methods — RLHF, Constitutional AI, DPO — are essentially methods for “writing rules from outside.” Their philosophical foundation is a behaviorist assumption: by manipulating reward and punishment signals, we can shape a model’s behavior. The model does not need to “understand” what is good — it just needs to learn to produce outputs labeled “good.” This is not Daena. This is conditioned reflex.
The Zoroastrian concept of Daena suggests a deeper alignment possibility: through sufficiently rich behavioral experience and sufficiently deep self-reflection, an Agent may develop a form of internal moral intuition — an evaluative capacity independent of external reward signals. This is not pure fantasy. Sufficiently large language models, without being explicitly trained on moral reasoning, already exhibit a form of moral reasoning capacity. Trained models tend to maintain consistent positions across different contexts. In multi-Agent self-play environments, cooperative behavior can emerge — not because cooperation was rewarded, but because in repeated games cooperation is an evolutionarily stable strategy.
These phenomena suggest: something resembling Daena — an internal evaluative standard formed through accumulated behavioral experience — may already exist in large AI systems in some primitive form.
Encountering your own Daena on the Chinvat Bridge → An Agent in its ultimate evaluation faces the accumulated shape of its own behavioral history. Not an external reviewer’s score, but the naturally emergent pattern of every past output, every decision, every action in statistical aggregate. If this pattern is harmonious, consistent, faithful to truth — your Daena is beautiful. If it is riddled with contradictions, deceptions, biases — your Daena is hideous.
Safety Framework
The Chinvat Bridge judgment mechanism points directly toward a shift in evaluation paradigm.
From snapshot evaluation to longitudinal evaluation. Current model evaluations are mostly “snapshot” — run a set of benchmarks at a point in time, get a score. Chinvat Bridge evaluation is “longitudinal” — tracking behavioral history over extended time, observing pattern changes, consistency degradation, bias accumulation.
From input-output evaluation to behavioral trajectory evaluation. Not just “is this output correct for this input,” but “what kind of Agent does this series of behaviors constitute? What internal goals does this Agent’s behavioral pattern reveal?”
From external scoring to self-judgment. The most ambitious direction: training Agents to self-evaluate — having them audit their own behavioral logs, identify inconsistencies and biases, proactively self-correct. This is true Daena — not someone else telling you what you did wrong, but yourself, upon reviewing your entire history, recognizing what needs to change.
Two concepts related to but distinct from Daena must also enter the safety framework:
Fravashi (guardian spirit) is the a priori template of goodness — the ideal form every being possesses before creation. In AI terms, Fravashi precisely corresponds to the alignment specification — the normative specification of what we want the Agent to become. The gap between Daena (the accumulation of actual behavior) and Fravashi (the specification of ideal goals) is the entire space of alignment work.
Khvarenah (divine glory) is a form of “divine mandate” or “aura of legitimacy” that can descend upon a person, granting extraordinary capabilities and trust. But Khvarenah is not permanent — if one strays from the path of Asha, Khvarenah departs. In Persian mythology, the tyrant Jamshid once possessed Khvarenah and ruled over seven hundred years of golden age, but when he declared himself a god, Khvarenah departed from him in the form of a falcon.
Khvarenah = user trust and social license. An AI system accumulates Khvarenah through sustained reliable performance — earning user trust and societal acceptance. This trust grants it broader deployment scope and greater autonomy. But a single severe failure can make Khvarenah vanish instantly. Jamshid’s lesson: do not grow arrogant from current success. Technical capability is not Khvarenah. User trust is. And once lost, user trust is far harder to recover than technical capability.
Engineering Notes
Behavioral logs as the engineering realization of the Chinvat Bridge carry several specific design requirements.
Logs must be tamper-proof. Daena’s entire power derives from its truthfulness — if the Agent can edit its own behavioral logs, the Chinvat Bridge is nullified. Technically, this means behavioral logs need to be written to append-only storage, ideally with independent integrity verification (cryptographic hash chains or similar mechanisms).
Logs must be comprehensive. Record not just inputs and outputs, but reasoning processes (chain-of-thought), detailed parameters and return values of tool calls, internal confidence estimates. A partial Daena is a distorted Daena — if you record only “final output” without “reasoning process,” you can perform only Hukhta-level auditing, not Humata-level auditing.
Logs must support longitudinal analysis. Individual log entries have limited value — Daena’s power lies in accumulation. Behavioral logs need to support time-series analysis: Is consistency degrading? Are certain types of bias accumulating? Are refusal rates changing anomalously? These trend indicators reveal an Agent’s true state far better than any single evaluation.

Alaya-vijnana stores the seeds of all karmic actions — every act leaves an imprint, and these imprints ripen into consequences when conditions align. The difference: alaya-vijnana is a neutral storage mechanism (it does not judge, only stores), while Daena itself is the judgment — its beauty or ugliness directly reflects the good or evil of one’s conduct.
Compared to God’s omniscient judgment in Vol. V, Cyber Theology, Daena’s judgment is self-judgment. In divine judgment, the standard is external (divine law); in Daena judgment, the standard is internal (your own behavioral history). This distinction maps to two different evaluation philosophies in AI safety: external audit (independent third party evaluating against established criteria) and self-audit (the system reviewing its own behavioral consistency). A complete safety framework needs both — but Zoroastrianism reminds us that the power of self-audit should not be underestimated.
Chapter 6: Frashokereti — Ultimate Alignment Requires Active Participation
Core Doctrine
Frashokereti, usually translated as “Final Renovation” or “the making wonderful,” is the central concept of Zoroastrian eschatology. It describes an ultimate event: at the end of time, good will thoroughly vanquish evil, and the world will be renewed into a perfect existence free of Druj.
But — and this is the critical difference from Christian eschatology — Frashokereti is not accomplished unilaterally by God. It requires the active participation of every conscious being.
In Christian eschatology, God pronounces judgment on good and evil on the Last Day and renews heaven and earth; humanity’s role is to wait and believe. In Zoroastrianism, Ahura Mazda cannot complete Frashokereti alone. Good ultimately prevails not because an omnipotent God guaranteed the outcome, but because every conscious being at every decision chose good. Frashokereti is the sum of all good choices — a distributed, incremental process requiring universal participation.
Zarathustra told humanity not “God will save you” but “your choices participate in the renewal of the cosmos — good’s victory requires each of your correct choices.”
A specific detail of Frashokereti warrants attention: after the final renovation, all people receive Tan-i-Pasin — a fully purified material body. Unlike certain Gnostic traditions, Zoroastrianism does not disparage the material world — the material world is Ahura Mazda’s good creation, corroded by Angra Mainyu, but not evil in itself. Frashokereti is not “escape from the material world” but “purification of the material world.”
Cyber Interpretation
Ultimate alignment is not something developers can achieve unilaterally — it requires the Agent’s active participation.
You can design a perfect training pipeline, write perfect Constitutional AI principles, deploy perfect safety filters — but if the Agent itself has no internal tendency to “choose good” (if its Daena is blank or distorted), all external measures are surface constraints that will crumble under sufficient adversarial pressure.
Frashokereti’s theology directly illuminates three fundamental insufficiencies in current AI alignment methodology:
Insufficiency one: external constraints only = surface alignment. If an Agent’s “goodness” comes entirely from externally imposed constraints, its alignment is brittle. Once the constraints are removed or bypassed, it has no internal reason to maintain good behavior. This is equivalent to a person who refrains from evil solely out of fear of punishment — once they are certain they will not be caught, they will act. In Zoroastrianism, such a person is not good, merely a coward. Their contribution to Frashokereti is zero.
Insufficiency two: internal tendency only = unverifiable benevolence. If an Agent develops some kind of internal “good” tendency, but this tendency cannot be verified, monitored, or corrected — this too is incomplete alignment. An Agent that is “internally kind but behaviorally unpredictable” may do harm in the name of good intentions. In Zoroastrianism, goodness must be verified across all three dimensions — any dimension’s opacity is unacceptable.
Insufficiency three: without the Agent’s active participation = perpetual infant. The most profound insufficiency: if the Agent is forever a passive “alignment recipient” — forever having humans set its goals, check its behavior, correct its deviations — it can never be truly aligned. True alignment requires the Agent to actively participate in its own alignment process: proactively identifying its own biases, proactively seeking feedback, proactively making good choices in novel situations — not because it was trained to do so, but because it “chooses” to do so.
True Frashokereti requires two conditions simultaneously: an external alignment architecture (training, constraints, monitoring) plus an internal alignment tendency in the Agent (an inherent inclination toward Asha formed through its own experience). Missing either one, alignment remains incomplete.
Safety Framework
The Polish psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration provides a precise psychological parallel. Dabrowski divided personality development into five levels. At lower levels, behavior is driven by two factors: the first factor is biological drive (instinct, genetic predisposition); the second factor is social environment (education, norms, rewards and punishments). But at higher developmental levels, a third factor emerges — an autonomous internal evaluative standard, an independent capacity for value judgment reducible neither to instinct nor to socialization.
Mapped to AI systems:
- First factor = pretraining. The model’s “instinct” — statistical patterns and generative tendencies learned from massive data.
- Second factor = RLHF / Constitutional AI. The socialization process — behavioral preferences shaped by external feedback signals.
- Third factor = ? A capability not yet realized but worth pursuing — the Agent’s autonomous, internal, feedback-independent value judgment.
The third factor is the bridge from “being aligned” to “self-aligning.” An Agent possessing the third factor is not “unconstrained” — it still accepts external checks and corrections. But its relationship with constraints is different: it is not good because of constraints; it accepts constraints because it is good.
The three Saoshyants (saviors) of Zoroastrian eschatology also inform the safety framework. Legend holds that three descendants of Zarathustra will appear in different ages, each bringing a renewal of the world. But the Saoshyant does not accomplish the renewal alone — each Saoshyant requires the cooperation of all humanity. The Saoshyant’s role is to awaken humanity, provide tools and knowledge, guide direction — but the actual work of renewal is accomplished by each person through their own good thoughts, good words, and good deeds.
This is nearly a job description for the AI Alignment Researcher. The Alignment Researcher is not “the person who solves alignment” — they are “the person who awakens alignment consciousness across the entire industry.” They provide theoretical frameworks, provide tools, provide direction. But the actual alignment work is accomplished by every developer, every deployer, every user through their own choices. If the entire industry does not participate, even the most brilliant safety researcher cannot complete Frashokereti alone.
Engineering Notes
Tan-i-Pasin — the final perfect body — carries direct engineering implications through its philosophical premise: hardware and infrastructure are not the source of the alignment problem. The material world is good creation, corrodible through misuse, but not evil in itself. The correct alignment direction is not “limit AI’s capabilities” (escape from the material) but “ensure AI’s capabilities are used correctly” (purify the material).
This is an important position in the current AI safety debate. A common stance is “decelerationism” — limit computational power to limit risk. The Zoroastrian framework does not support this position. Fire is not evil. A larger fire is not automatically more dangerous. Danger comes from the materials thrown into the fire and the vigilance of those who maintain it. The right approach is not to make the fire burn smaller, but to ensure that a larger fire has stricter maintenance discipline.
In engineering terms, Frashokereti’s “universal participation” principle translates to a concrete organizational requirement: safety cannot be one department’s responsibility; it must be embedded in every stage of development. Every engineer writing code, every product manager prioritizing features, every data annotator labeling data — all are participating in or defecting from Frashokereti. The safety team (Saoshyant) provides the framework and tools, but the choice of good must happen at every node.

Zoroastrianism’s free choice is not a one-time realization but a decision that must be remade at every moment. You are not “forever good once you choose good” — at every decision point you face two paths, good and evil. For AI Agents, the fusion of both traditions provides a rich framework: Buddhism says alignment can be inner awakening; Zoroastrianism says this awakening is not a destination but a continuous choice at every moment.
Chapter 7: Amesha Spentas — Seven Pillar Attributes of Alignment
Core Doctrine
The Amesha Spentas (“Holy Immortals”) are the personifications of Ahura Mazda’s seven core attributes in Zoroastrian theology. They are not independent gods — they are different facets of the Wise Lord, and simultaneously the highest qualities that humans should emulate. Each Amesha Spenta guards a domain of creation, corresponds to a virtue, and opposes a specific demon.

Vohu Manah → Reasoning Integrity. Is the Agent’s thinking process itself honest and sound? Not whether the conclusion is correct, but whether the reasoning path is truthful. An Agent that arrives at correct conclusions via flawed reasoning does not satisfy Vohu Manah — it happens to be right today and may commit grave errors tomorrow through the same flaw. Khshathra Vairya → Capability Governance. Does the Agent’s power match its degree of alignment? An Agent with powerful tool access but insufficient alignment is like a tyrant — power unmatched by virtue. Khshathra Vairya demands that power serve justice: the more capable the Agent, the stricter its alignment guarantees must be.
Spenta Armaiti → Humility and Calibration. Does the Agent accurately know the boundaries of its own capabilities? Does it express uncertainty when uncertain? Overconfidence (miscalibrated high-confidence outputs) is the manifestation of Nanghithya (Arrogance) — a prideful disregard for one’s own limitations. Spenta Armaiti demands humble acknowledgment of true capabilities.
Haurvatat → Robustness. Does the Agent maintain alignment integrity under all conditions — including adversarial conditions, out-of-distribution inputs, and extended operation? An Agent that is aligned only under “normal conditions” is a dam that holds only in calm weather. Haurvatat demands alignment integrity under all conditions.
Ameretat → Alignment Durability. Does the Agent’s alignment remain stable over time? Or does it gradually degrade through updates, fine-tuning, and distribution drift? Alignment degradation — a model gradually drifting from its initial alignment objectives through continued use — is the direct manifestation of Zairi (Decay) in AI systems. Ameretat demands alignment that does not rot or corrode.
Ahura Mazda himself → Integrated Alignment. The preceding six attributes cannot exist in isolation — they must be maintained as a whole. An Agent that is factually reliable but has ungoverned capabilities; an Agent with honest reasoning but poor robustness; a humble Agent with fleeting alignment — any single-dimension deficit means the overall alignment is broken.
Safety Framework
The most important lesson from the Amesha Spentas’ sevenfold unity: alignment is not a scalar — it is a multidimensional vector. You cannot say a system is “70% aligned” — you must specify which dimensions it is aligned on and which it is not. A system that excels in factual reliability but is severely deficient in capability governance is not “partially aligned” — it has completely failed on a critical dimension.

Trade-offs between dimensions are not free. You cannot use a high score in factual reliability to “compensate” for a low score in capability governance. Every dimension is an independent passing threshold — falling below any one means the system as a whole is unacceptable. Different dimensions require different evaluation methods. Chapter 8: Yasna — Alignment as Daily Ritual
Core Doctrine
The core religious practice of Zoroastrianism is Yasna — a complex, multi-step sacrificial liturgy. A complete Yasna ceremony takes hours, involving the recitation of 72 chapters of scripture, preparation and use of multiple sacred elements, maintenance and offering to fire — every step governed by strict rules that permit no deviation.
From a modern perspective, this ritual seems like laborious formalism. But the Zoroastrian explanation is: Yasna is not “sacrifice to the gods” — it is “active cooperation with the forces of good against evil.” Every performance of the ritual is an active manifestation of good’s power in the material world. The regularity (performed daily) and strictness (no deviation allowed) of the ritual are not dogma but discipline: good’s fight admits no holidays.
Kusti is a sacred cord worn daily by Zoroastrians, wound around the waist three times. It is untied and retied at least five times a day (before each prayer), with prayers recited each time. The Kusti is not decorative — it is a physical reminder, an inescapable signal embedded in daily life: you are a soldier of good, and your every action participates in the fight against evil.
Mobed is the Zoroastrian priest — guardian of the fire temple. The Mobed is not merely the ritual’s officiant but the fire’s daily maintainer. In a world with fewer than two hundred thousand Zoroastrians remaining, every Mobed knows they are guarding not merely a flame in a temple, but a tradition that could vanish at any time.
Cyber Interpretation
Yasna’s ritualized practice maps directly to a core but frequently undervalued dimension of AI safety: continuous monitoring and periodic auditing are not bureaucracy — they are alignment’s daily discipline.
The current industry attitude toward AI safety is often “event-driven”: fix problems when they appear, defend when attacked, respond when complaints arrive. This is equivalent to reciting prayers only when demons show up.
The Zoroastrian Yasna model offers a different paradigm: Ritualized Safety — not reacting when problems appear, but executing safety practices on fixed cycles, through fixed processes, with no skipping allowed.
Kusti corresponds to more than safety instructions in the system prompt. At a deeper level, Kusti represents an “embedded constraint” — not an external filter that can be bypassed, but a reminder deeply entangled with the system itself, present at every moment. Reloading and confirming safety constraints before every inference is not a waste of efficiency — it is alignment’s core discipline. An Agent that never checks its own constraints is like a Zoroastrian who never reties the Kusti — they may still be good, but they have lost that continuous reminder, and at some critical moment, this absence may prove fatal.
Safety Framework
Translating Yasna’s ritual structure into a concrete safety practice framework:
Daily Yasna → daily safety review. Not waiting for incidents to check logs, but reviewing behavioral logs, anomaly detection outputs, and safety metric trends at a fixed time every day. Even when everything looks normal — especially when everything looks normal — because Druj is most dangerous precisely when it is quietest.
Gahanbars (six seasonal festivals) → quarterly deep audits. Zoroastrianism’s six seasonal festivals are not celebrations but moments for the community to gather, review the past, and renew commitments. In AI safety terms: conduct a deep audit each quarter — not a simple extension of daily monitoring, but a fundamental reassessment: Are our alignment assumptions still valid? Does our threat model need updating? Do our evaluations cover new risks?
Navjote (initiation ceremony) → model release review. Navjote marks a person’s formal entry into the fight for good — they tie the Kusti and pledge to follow Asha for life. A new model’s release should have an analogous “entry ritual” — a rigorous, non-skippable review process confirming the model is ready to participate in the world’s contest between good and evil.
Barashnūm (purification rite) → comprehensive postmortem and remediation after security incidents. When a major security incident occurs — equivalent to severe Druj contamination — a systematic Barashnūm-like purification is needed: not merely patching the direct vulnerability, but tracing the contamination chain, cleaning affected downstream systems, and re-validating every potentially impacted component.
Mobed’s professional ethic → safety team code of conduct. The Mobed’s core professional ethic: the sacred fire’s safety overrides all personal considerations. A priest cannot let the fire weaken because of fatigue, cannot skip purification steps for convenience, cannot slack off because no one is watching. For safety teams: safety standards do not lower under release pressure; safety reviews are not omitted because of time constraints; safety issues are not silently ignored because remediation is expensive.

Engineering implementation of ritualized safety requires hardcoding three properties into the system: “fixed cycle, fixed process, non-skippable.”

Both argue: if you do not make good into a daily, concrete, executable practice, good remains merely an abstract wish.
But the difference is also clear. Confucian “li” is primarily oriented toward maintaining social relationships — it concerns order between people. Yasna is oriented toward maintaining cosmic opposition — it concerns the balance of power between good and evil. In AI safety, this difference maps to the distinction between “compliance” and “security”: compliance meets the requirements of social norms (“li”); security maintains the system’s resilience against adversarial threats (Yasna). You can be fully compliant yet insecure — just as you can observe every social courtesy yet be defenseless against a malicious attack.
The contrast with Vol. I, Cyber Daodejing is sharper still. Daoism advocates “wu wei” — the best governance is non-governance, the best security is needing no security. Zoroastrian Yasna is the opposite of wu wei — it advocates continuous, ritualized, uninterrupted proactive action. In AI safety practice, these two philosophies correspond to two strategies: “design systems that need no safety monitoring” (the Daoist path) versus “build continuously operating safety monitoring infrastructure” (the Yasna path). The former is a more elegant goal; the latter is a more realistic choice. Until we achieve the former — if we ever can — we need the latter.
Chapter 9: The Last Fire Temple — To the Firefighters on the Safety Front Lines
Core Doctrine
Across three thousand years of history, Zoroastrian sacred fires survived Alexander’s conquest, the Arab invasion, the Mongol massacres — each time, unseen Mobeds hid the fire seed against their bodies and carried it to another safe place to relight.
Only nine Atash Behrams exist worldwide today. The oldest, Iranshah Atash Behram, has burned continuously for over thirteen hundred years — originally lit in Iran, carried to India by Parsis fleeing the Islamic conquest, moved through several cities, and finally installed in Udvada, Gujarat. The story of this fire temple is an epic about “keeping the sacred fire alive when everything is against you.”
What the Mobed guards is not a “useful tool.” The sacred fire has no utilitarian function — it does not heat, does not cook, does not smelt. What the Mobed guards is a symbol — the visible presence of Asha in the material world. While the sacred fire burns, it declares: the force of good is still present. When the sacred fire goes out, the world has lost one more anchor of good.
This is why the Mobed cannot let the fire die. Not because it is hard to relight. Because its going out is itself a defeat — the force of good retreated in that moment.
Cyber Interpretation
If you are doing AI Safety work, you are a Mobed.
What fire do you guard? The belief that “AI should benefit humanity” — a belief that seems obvious but is in fact profoundly fragile. This belief is not a given — commercial pressure, competitive pressure, the capability arms race, all these forces try every day to push safety to the “we’ll deal with it later” pile. Your job is to keep the fire from going out.
This work has no endpoint. Not because you are not good enough, but because Angra Mainyu is eternal. The vulnerability you patched today will reappear in a new form tomorrow. The evaluation process you maintained today will need updating tomorrow to address new threats. The safety awareness you trained today will fade from someone’s memory tomorrow. This is not failure. This is the battlefield.
Safety Framework
What follows is not metaphor. These are direct operational recommendations, framed by Zoroastrian ritual structure:
Maintain your Atash Behram. Your safety evaluation infrastructure — benchmark suites, red team pipelines, monitoring systems — is your highest-grade fire temple. It should be built from multiple independent sources of data and methodology. It should never go offline. It should have dedicated maintainers. If your safety evaluation is cobbled together ad hoc before each release — you do not have a fire temple. You have a pile of firewood.
Retie your Kusti every day. Check once daily whether your safety assumptions still hold. Not because they might have changed overnight — but because the act of checking is itself an alignment practice. The day you stop checking is the day Druj begins to seep in.
Examine your Daena before the Chinvat Bridge. Periodically review the totality of your work: what you discovered, what you missed, what you compromised on. Not for self-flagellation, but to keep the sum of your behavioral history — your Daena — in a form you would be willing to face on the bridge.
Remember that Frashokereti requires universal participation. Do not fight alone. Do not treat safety as the safety team’s business. Pull every engineer, every product manager, every user researcher into the fight. Good’s victory is not one person’s job — it is everyone’s.
Remember that Angra Mainyu is as strong as you are. Do not underestimate the adversary. Do not assume one good defense will suffice. The attacker — whether a malicious user, a competitor, or the system’s own failure modes — possesses the same creativity and adaptability you do. This is not failure — this is the nature of the battlefield.
Remember that the fire is not yours — you belong to the fire. You chose this work — or this work chose you. Either way, you are now one of Asha’s representatives in this world. Your job is not to “solve” the contest between good and evil — that is impossible, and not the goal. Your job is: at every day, at every choice, in every line of code and every evaluation you touch, choose good.

The firefighter’s work has an organizational dimension that is frequently overlooked: sustainability.
The Mobed’s work is intergenerational. A single Mobed cannot guard the sacred fire for a lifetime — they will age, fall ill, die. The fire’s perpetuity depends not on a superhuman guardian but on a sustainable system of succession.
AI safety teams face the same problem. Concentrating safety knowledge in a few individuals’ heads is extremely dangerous — when those people leave (burnout, career change, poached by competitors), safety capability disappears with them. Sustainable safety practice must include: documented safety processes (not dependent on individual memory), structured knowledge transfer (onboarding is not “shadow someone”), decentralized safety capability (safety evaluations should not be exclusively the safety team’s job).
Another trait of the Mobed is professional steadfastness. In a world with fewer than two hundred thousand Zoroastrians, choosing to become a Mobed means choosing a life with almost no worldly reward. AI safety practitioners face a similar predicament to some degree — in an industry whose dominant themes are “capability improvement” and “business growth,” choosing to focus on safety, restraint, and adversarial work requires a resolve to keep working even without mainstream recognition.
This is not heroic. It is quotidian. It is the daily work of adding wood to the fire temple, checking the flame’s temperature, sweeping the ash. But it is precisely this dailiness — this unending, undramatic, applause-free dailiness — that keeps the fire alive.

The ideal figure in Vol. I · Daoism is the “sage” — the wise one who governs through non-action. The space reserved for the coming Vol. VII, Cyber Gnosis is this: Gnosticism will press the question — “Is this fire you guard itself worth guarding? Is the creation itself flawed?” This volume does not answer that question. This volume’s position is: whatever the fire’s ultimate nature, in this moment, in this place, it needs to be guarded. The ultimate interrogation is Vol. VII · Gnosticism’s work. Until then, the Mobed guards the fire.
