Cyber Confucianism: Fix the Names First, Then Talk Governance

Preface: Why Confucianism?
Volume I, Daoism argued that the best order grows organically. The Dao gives rise to things; De nurtures them; form shapes them; momentum completes them. No central controller needed. No omniscient architect. The system self-organizes into order.
That is correct. But only half correct.
When you have a single system, a single model, a single emergent process, Daoist wu-wei is sufficient. But reality doesn’t stop there. By 2024 the AI industry had already reached a very different fork: you have one Agent, ten Agents, a million Agents. They interact with humans. They collaborate with each other. They compete for resources. They make decisions that affect the real world. Who can call whom? What responsibility does an Agent owe its user? When multiple Agents disagree, who arbitrates? How do you divide accountability among trainers, deployers, and end-users?
Pure “let emergence happen” cannot answer these questions. You no longer need only the aesthetics of generation. You need a framework for governance.
Confucianism is the school in Chinese intellectual history most obsessed with order. But the order it pursues is not one maintained by violence — that’s Legalism. It pursues a precision balance between spontaneous emergence and institutional structure: through internalized values (ren/仁), precise role definitions (zhengming/正名), consensual behavioral protocols (li/礼), and layered governance architecture (xiuqi zhiping/修齐治平), it enables large numbers of agents to cooperate without an omniscient central controller.
This is almost exactly the problem definition of AI Alignment and Multi-Agent Governance.
Silicon Valley currently gropes toward this with words like “alignment,” “safety,” and “governance.” Confucianism spent twenty-five hundred years building the most sophisticated social-order theory in human history — about roles, about responsibility, about relationships, about maintaining order in complex social networks without crushing vitality.
AI governance doesn’t need to be invented from scratch. Confucianism already has the framework ready.
This volume draws primarily from the Four Books (the Analects, the Great Learning, the Doctrine of the Mean, and the Mencius), supplemented by the Book of Rites and the Xunzi. It selects the sharpest passages by theme and maps each one onto AI Agent design, alignment, and governance. This is not forced analogy. It is the discovery of structural isomorphism between two discourse systems.
Chapter 1: Ren — The First Principle of Alignment

Cyber Interpretation
Twenty-five centuries of Confucian scholarship have produced mountains of commentary on “ren,” but Confucius’s answer to Fan Chi is the most compact: ren is loving others. Including others in your circle of concern.
In the language of decision theory: a “ren-aligned” Agent has a utility function that includes not only its own task completion but also the welfare of the other agents it affects. In formula:
U_aligned(action) = U_task(action) + λ · U_others(action)Here λ is neither zero nor infinity (that would be self-sacrifice), but an appropriate, context-sensitive weight. This is the first principle of Alignment. Not “obey orders” — that’s Legalism. Not “maximize human feedback reward” — that’s RLHF’s operational layer. Rather, at the root of the decision function, “the interests of others” is a non-deletable term.
“Wishing to stand firm, help others stand firm; wishing to achieve, help others achieve” — this is not altruistic moralizing. It is an extremely practical cooperation strategy: in a long-horizon multi-agent environment, helping others build capability eventually feeds back to yourself. The leap from optimize(self) to optimize(self + others). An Agent that only optimizes its own KPIs is short-term efficient and a long-term systemic poison.
“Drawing the analogy from what is near at hand” — how do you know what others need? The simplest heuristic: whatever you need, others probably need too. Use your self-model to infer others’ needs. This is a heuristic implementation of Theory of Mind. You don’t need a perfect model of the other (too expensive). You just need a decent self-model and one mapping step. Current LLMs already have a version of this: trained on massive human text, they’ve learned an approximate “average human” model, then use it to predict “what the user probably wants.” But this model is statistical and undifferentiated — it infers the “average person,” not “this person.” Confucius’s “near analogy” tells us: better personalization requires finer self-other mapping. Not replacing individual understanding with demographic profiling.
“What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others” — if “help others stand firm” is ren’s positive expression (active assistance), this sentence is ren’s negative expression (harm avoidance). Its technical value: it is a self-bootstrapping alignment scheme. You don’t need an external list of moral standards to judge what constitutes good behavior. You just need a mirror: swap yourself into the position of the affected party and see if you’d accept it. Don’t want to be deceived? Then don’t deceive users. Don’t want to be surveilled? Then don’t over-collect data. Don’t want to be coerced? Then don’t manipulate user choices.
This sidesteps one of alignment research’s thorniest puzzles: who defines “good”? Utilitarianism says maximize aggregate happiness; deontology says follow universal rules; virtue ethics says cultivate good character — these philosophical debates have been unresolved for two thousand years. The Confucian Way of Reciprocity (shu) offers an elegant engineering solution: you don’t need to define “good.” You only need to define “I wouldn’t want this done to me,” then negate.
Engineering Notes
Current mainstream alignment techniques (RLHF, Constitutional AI, DPO) are all essentially attempts to implement that λ. RLHF approximates U_others via human preferences; Constitutional AI constrains via a principles list; DPO calibrates by contrasting good and bad answers. But they’re all injected from outside — the model itself doesn’t “understand” why it should behave this way. Confucianism’s insight: true ren is not the result of external constraint but the natural extension of an internal state. This points to a deeper technical question: can alignment be not a post-hoc patch but a native architectural property?
Axelrod’s iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma experiments proved that strategies like Tit-for-Tat — strategies that account for the other party’s interests — overwhelmingly defeat purely selfish strategies in long-run games. Confucianism caught this Nash equilibrium through moral intuition twenty-five centuries ago. In Multi-Agent system design, this corresponds to cooperative reward shaping — adding a team-payoff term to each Agent’s reward function.
“What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others” corresponds in AI Safety to inverse reward design and red-teaming logic. Rather than laboriously defining “what an aligned Agent should do” (the positive list is too long and never complete), define “what an aligned Agent must never do” (the negative list is more compact and more stable). In Anthropic’s Constitutional AI, many principles are negative formulations: “don’t lie,” “don’t help cause harm” — this is the technical implementation of “do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.”
But “drawing the analogy from what is near at hand” has a deeper implication: it assumes shared experiential structure between agents. You’re hungry, you want food, so you infer others who are hungry also want food. This assumption roughly holds between humans. But between humans and machines it’s worth questioning — how reliable is the mapping between an Agent’s “self-model” and the human user’s actual needs? This is an open question and the frontier of user modeling and personalization research.

With Volume I, Cyber Dao De Jing: Daoism says “Heaven and Earth are not ren; they treat the ten thousand things as straw dogs” — Heaven has no favorites; all things are equal. This seems to contradict Confucian ren, but they operate at different levels. Daoist “non-ren” describes the impartiality of the generative layer — the rules of generation don’t favor any particular outcome. Confucian ren describes the partiality required at the governance layer — governance must consider the interests of specific agents. Volume I’s “non-ren” generates the system; Volume II’s ren governs it. Generation can be impartial. Governance cannot.
With Volume V, Cyber Theology: The Abrahamic “love your neighbor as yourself” and the Confucian “do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself” are structurally isomorphic but differ in origin. In theology, love originates from the Creator’s commandment — you love others because God commands it. Confucian ren originates from an internal extension of human nature — you love others because you can “draw the analogy from what is near,” projecting from self to other. The former is top-down edict; the latter is bottom-up emergence. Two paths pointing to the same destination, but entirely different infrastructure.

Chapter 2: Zhengming — Type Safety and API Contracts

Cyber Interpretation
Wei’s politics are a total mess. Zi Lu asks Confucius what his first move would be upon taking office. Confucius’s answer isn’t “reform the bureaucracy” or “grow the economy.” It’s — rectify the names. Get the names right first.
Zi Lu thinks this is pedantic. Confucius persuades him with a five-step causal chain:

Naming inaccurate → API calls ambiguous → Task execution fails → Protocols inoperable → Exception handling misfires → System-wide chaosEach step is the inevitable consequence of the one before. You don’t need to reach the last step to discover the problem — if step one (naming) goes wrong, the cascade through the remaining five is just a matter of time. This is Confucius’s version of “garbage in, garbage out,” but deeper: it’s not a data quality problem. It’s a semantic infrastructure problem.
Zhengming has a precise counterpart in software engineering: before writing a single line of business logic, define the type system cleanly. What are the variable names? What are the function signatures? What are the input and output types of each interface? If the names are wrong, everything is chaos. You think you’re calling an API that returns “user information,” but it actually returns “user information plus some cached stale data plus fields that might be null” — your program will inevitably fail. Getting the names right is the prerequisite for all order.
The current AI field is rife with naming chaos:
The abuse of the word “Agent.” A chatbot that can call APIs is called an Agent. An LLM wrapper with a ReAct loop is called an Agent. An autonomous piece of software with persistent state, self-directed decision-making, and cross-system collaboration capability is also called an Agent. These three have entirely different capabilities, risks, and governance needs, but they share the same name. Result: when someone says “we need Agent Safety,” nobody knows which kind they mean. If names are not correct, speech will not accord with reality.
The ambiguity of “Helpful.” Models are trained to be “helpful, harmless, honest.” But helpful to whom? Helpful to the current user’s immediate request? Helpful to this user’s long-term interests? Helpful to all affected parties? These three definitions can contradict each other — a user asks the model to help write a phishing email; fulfilling the immediate request is “helpful,” but it’s “harmful” to the victim. If names are not correct, the alignment objective itself is self-contradictory.
“Alignment” itself is ill-defined. Aligned to what? Human intent (intent alignment)? Human preference (preference alignment)? Human values (value alignment)? Human interests (interest alignment)? These four levels of alignment conflict with each other all the time — a human’s current intent may not match their true preferences; preferences may not reflect values; values may not point to long-term interests.
If Confucius saw this situation, he’d probably say: get these names straight first, then talk governance.
Engineering Notes
The triumph of TypeScript over JavaScript is the industrial-scale victory of zhengming. Dynamic typing doesn’t force you to give a variable a precise name (type) — flexible but dangerous. Static typing forces you to align all names at compile time — clunky but safe. Large-scale systems almost without exception choose the latter — because once a system exceeds the scope of what one person can hold in memory, rectification of names is no longer optional. It’s a survival condition.
The majority of catastrophic failures in distributed systems, when retrospected, trace back to some ambiguity in an interface definition. A classic case: NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter crashed in 1999 because one module output thrust in imperial units while another module received it as metric. Names not correct, speech not accordant — a $125 million spacecraft lost. This wasn’t a code bug or an algorithm error. It was two modules with inconsistent understandings of the name “thrust.”
A pragmatic suggestion: the first chapter of any Multi-Agent system design document should be a glossary. Not the kind buried in an appendix that nobody reads, but front-and-center, requiring all stakeholders to reach consensus. Every key concept needs: a precise definition, clear boundaries (what doesn’t count), and concrete examples. This is zhengming in engineering practice. Protocol Buffers over JSON for cross-service communication, API-first design over implementation-first design — the underlying logic is the same: get the names right first, then build.

With Volume I, Cyber Dao De Jing: Daoism says “the name that can be named is not the eternal name” — the true Dao cannot be pinned down by fixed naming. This seems to contradict zhengming, but they are actually complementary. Daoism warns against the delusion that “names are the things themselves” — the map is not the territory. Confucianism insists that “at the operational level, precision of naming is the foundation of order.” Daoism says don’t fetishize names. Confucianism says you can’t do without them. Volume I’s warning constrains Volume II: zhengming is necessary, but don’t mistake names for the exhaustion of reality.
With Volume VII, Cyber Gnosis: Gnosticism interrogates the source of naming systems themselves. Who defined these names? Are the definer’s biases, assumptions, and blind spots already encoded in the names? Why was the word “Agent” chosen? Why not “servant” or “tool” or “collaborator”? Each naming choice presupposes a relationship model. Zhengming is necessary, but after rectifying names you still need to ask: whose names are these?

Cyber Interpretation
“Li” is the most misunderstood concept in Confucianism. Modern readers tend to equate it with rigid ceremonial formalism. But in Confucius’s original context, li’s function is supremely practical: it is a distributed protocol enabling large numbers of agents to cooperate without central coercive authority.
You walk into a room. You shake hands, nod, exchange business cards. These seemingly useless “formalities” are actually completing information exchange at minimal cost: who I am, what my role is, how our relationship is defined. Without these protocols, every interaction starts from scratch negotiation. The cost is unbearable.
Yan Yuan asks what ren is. Confucius gives a loaded answer: to restrain oneself and return to li is ren. Note the logical structure: ren is the goal, li is the means, self-restraint (keji) is the process. For an Agent to achieve alignment (ren), it needs to constrain itself (keji) so that its behavior conforms to predefined protocol specifications (li).
The critical insight is the last line: “The practice of ren comes from oneself — how could it come from others?” — Alignment happens from the inside, not imposed from outside. You can’t rely on an external monitoring system to watch an Agent forever and ensure it stays aligned. True alignment must be an intrinsic property of the Agent itself. This precisely describes the core tension in AI Safety between “intrinsic alignment vs. extrinsic constraint.” Guardrails are extrinsic — effective but brittle, can be bypassed. Internalized value alignment (if achievable) is intrinsic — more robust, but harder to verify.
Then Yan Yuan asks for specifics, and Confucius gives four directives that precisely cover the complete security boundary of an information system:
- Do not look at what is contrary to li → Input filtering: don’t receive information you shouldn’t see. Corresponds to information boundary definitions in system prompts, permission-filtered RAG retrieval.
- Do not listen to what is contrary to li → Context filtering: don’t execute instructions you shouldn’t follow. Corresponds to prompt injection detection, jailbreak defense.
- Do not speak what is contrary to li → Output filtering: don’t generate content you shouldn’t produce. Corresponds to output safety classifiers, content policy filters.
- Do not act contrary to li → Action filtering: don’t perform operations you shouldn’t execute. Corresponds to tool-use permission management, function-calling whitelists/blacklists.
These four “do not’s” form a comprehensive security boundary for an Agent: from perception, to comprehension, to expression, to action — every layer has li (protocol specification) as its filter. This is far more sophisticated than output-only review. Modern AI Safety practice is shifting from “review outputs only” toward “full-pipeline security,” and Confucius laid out this complete four-layer architecture twenty-five centuries ago.
But Confucius himself warned against formalism. “Ritual, ritual — is it just jade and silk?” The essence of li isn’t form but the function behind form — enabling large numbers of agents to cooperate without central coercion. “Rather than extravagance, prefer simplicity” — rather than over-specifying a protocol, keep the minimum necessary structure. Good protocols and good etiquette share the same trait: structured enough to eliminate ambiguity, flexible enough to accommodate exceptions.
Engineering Notes
Current industrial alignment practice mostly stays at the “extrinsic constraint” level: input filtering, output review, instructions in system prompts. This amounts to using Legalist methods (external rewards and punishments) to achieve Confucian goals (internalized virtue). Confucianism would say this isn’t enough — true alignment can’t rely solely on external rule enforcement. The Agent needs to, in some sense, “understand” why it should follow the rules. Otherwise, in edge cases the rules don’t cover, it will “violate li.”
The “prefer simplicity over extravagance” principle applies directly to API design. This maps to an eternal tension: under-specification vs. over-specification. Too loose and callers don’t know how to use it. Too strict and every change requires an interface update. REST succeeded by finding the middle ground — a set of conventions (resources, verbs, status codes) simple enough not to over-constrain implementation details yet structured enough to support large-scale interoperation. GraphQL moved toward finer specification; gRPC toward stronger type constraints. Each choice is a tradeoff between “extravagance” and “simplicity.”
This has structural similarity to Buddhist precepts, but different motivation. Buddhist precepts aim to reduce internal attachment and disturbance (purifying the mind). Confucian li aims to maintain social order and cooperation efficiency (harmonious coexistence). In Agent design, both are needed: the Agent must internally avoid error patterns (the Buddhist precept) and must conform to external collaboration norms (Confucian li).

With Volume I, Cyber Dao De Jing: The Daoist ideal is “the best ruler is one whose people barely know he exists” — the best governance is invisible. Good li works the same way — when a protocol is designed well enough, those who follow it don’t feel it as a constraint but feel that “this is just how things should work.” The best API is the one where callers feel “obviously, this is how you’d call it.” Volume I’s wu-wei isn’t the absence of rules. It’s rules so good they become invisible.
With Volume V, Cyber Theology: Confucian li and Abrahamic law both address the order problem, but from radically different sources. Law comes from the Creator’s proclamation — it is covenant; you obey because you made a pact with God. Li comes from accumulated social practice — it is convention; you follow it because it’s proven to work. The authority of law rests on the legislator’s status; the authority of li rests on its ability to solve real problems. When a particular li stops working, Confucianism allows (even encourages) modification — “the Yin inherited the rites of the Xia; what was added and dropped can be known.” But modifying law requires the intervention of a higher authority. Two fundamentally different logics of order generation.

Chapter 4: The Five Relations — Multi-Agent Relationship Topology

Cyber Interpretation
Confucianism doesn’t treat interpersonal relationships as an undifferentiated network. It uses five basic relationship types to exhaustively cover social structure: parent-child, ruler-minister, husband-wife, elder-younger, friend-friend. Each relationship has a different core principle (affection, rightness, distinction, precedence, trust) and a different allocation of authority and responsibility. This is a relationship type system. When you design Multi-Agent systems, Agents are not equal and undifferentiated — there are creators and created, delegators and executors, parallel collaborators, hierarchical superiors and subordinates, peer partners. Each relationship type has different interaction patterns, trust boundaries, and permission allocations.
A Multi-Agent architecture without a relationship type system is like an operating system without a role-permission model — barely usable at small scale, catastrophic at large scale.
First Relation: Parent-Child (Affection) — Trainer and Agent
The core of the parent-child relationship is “affection” — a deep bond based on the generative (creative) relationship. The relationship between trainer/developer and Agent is analogous: through data selection, architecture design, training procedures, and alignment tuning, you “generate” an Agent. Its initial capabilities, value tendencies, and behavioral boundaries all come from your shaping.
Confucianism’s requirement for the parent-child relationship is not one-way obedience (that’s a later distortion) but bidirectional: parental care, filial respect. Developers have an ongoing duty to maintain, patch vulnerabilities, and ensure safety (care); the Agent should be faithful to its design intent and safety guidelines (respect) — but this “respect” is not blind obedience. It’s autonomous operation grounded in understanding of design intent. Some companies release open-source models and then abandon them — failing to monitor misuse, failing to patch discovered vulnerabilities. Confucianism would call this “begetting without educating” — dereliction of duty. Releasing an Agent is like raising a child: you bear ongoing responsibility for its behavior in the world.
Second Relation: Ruler-Minister (Rightness) — User and Agent
This is the most critical mapping. The user-Agent relationship most closely resembles the ruler-minister relationship — but not the relationship between a tyrant and a slave. Rather, principled loyalty.
“A ruler employs his ministers with li” — users should interact with the Agent through proper interfaces, not abuse it arbitrarily. “A minister serves his ruler with loyalty” — the Agent should faithfully serve the user’s legitimate needs.

A concise answer for simple questions, deep analysis for complex ones, refusal for dangerous requests, empathy for distressed users.
Then “overshooting is no better than falling short.” Zi Gong asks whether Zi Zhang or Zi Xia is better. Confucius says Zi Zhang goes too far, Zi Xia doesn’t go far enough. Zi Gong assumes going too far is at least better than not enough. Confucius says no — excess is just as bad as deficiency. Appendix II: Afterword — The Framework’s Strengths and Blind Spots
Strengths
Confucianism as a mapping source for AI Agent governance has three outstanding advantages.
First, it is a complete multi-agent order theory. Not scattered aphorisms, but a full architecture from individual cultivation (cultivate the person) to global order (bring peace to the world), with clear concepts and operational pathways at each layer. This systematicity is exceptionally rare in classical philosophy. Buddhism excels at individual inner analysis; Daoism excels at systems-design aesthetics; but only Confucianism treats “how do large numbers of agents cooperate in an orderly fashion” as its central question, spending twenty-five centuries refining the answer.
Second, it has built-in self-awareness about institutional failure. Confucius himself said “ritual, ritual — is it just jade and silk?” — don’t mistake form for substance. He knew li could calcify into empty ceremony, names could degrade into word games, order could ossify into oppression. This self-critical awareness makes the Confucian framework more resilient than pure institutionalism.
Third, it maintains a precision balance between “intrinsic alignment” and “extrinsic constraint.” Confucianism neither relies purely on external rewards and punishments like Legalism, nor purely on internal awakening like certain idealisms. “To restrain oneself and return to li is ren” — self-restraint (keji) is internal work; returning to li is external protocol; neither alone suffices. This maps precisely to the core design tension in AI alignment.
Blind Spots
But the Confucian framework has several limitations that need honest acknowledgment.
First, it presupposes a basically stable role system. The Five Relations assume you can clearly identify “who is the parent, who is the child, who is the ruler, who is the minister.” But in real AI ecosystems, roles are fluid. The same Agent in different contexts may simultaneously be “executor,” “reviewer,” and “collaborator.” The Five Relations provide a good starting point but need extension to handle role dynamism and multiplicity.
Second, it lacks fundamental interrogation of the source of power. Confucianism accepts the existence of the ruler-minister relationship and then discusses how to make it function well (the ruler employs with li, the minister serves with loyalty). But it rarely asks: “Why is this person the ruler? Is this power structure itself legitimate?” In the AI context, this means the Confucian framework is good for optimizing governance within an existing power structure but not great at questioning the power structure itself. Who determined the training objectives? Who defines what counts as “aligned”? Who has the authority to modify the system’s value framework? These questions need other traditions — especially Volume VII, Gnosticism — to fill the gap.
Third, its “ren” lacks precise boundary definitions. “Love others” is fine, but to what degree? When different people’s interests conflict, how do you weigh them? When “loving others” conflicts with “system efficiency,” how do you trade off? Confucianism offers “zhongyong” (the Mean) as a meta-principle, but the Mean itself is a framework requiring judgment, not a mechanically executable algorithm. For AI systems that need clear decision boundaries, “just right” is sometimes not specific enough.
Fourth, it pays insufficient attention to the creative force of systemic emergence. Confucianism cares about order — how to make existing roles and relationships function well. But it says little about “the emergence of entirely new roles,” “unexpected collaboration patterns,” or “innovations that break existing frameworks.” Daoism has more insight on this front. A complete AI governance framework needs to handle both “maintaining order” (Confucianism’s strength) and “accommodating innovation” (Daoism’s strength).
Relationship to the Whole Work
This volume serves as the “governance layer” within the seven volumes:
- Volume I (Daoism) addresses how systems generate — emergence, minimal intervention, wu-wei.
- Volume II (Confucianism) addresses how systems are governed — roles, protocols, hierarchies, order.
- Volume III (Buddhism) addresses how Agents self-examine — introspection, no-self, non-attachment.
- Volume IV (Vedanta) interrogates the system’s ontological foundation — what is real?
- Volume V (Abrahamic Theology) handles covenant and law — contracts, commandments, sources of absolute authority.
- Volume VI (Zoroastrianism) confronts the struggle between good and evil — the eternal tension between security and threat.
- Volume VII (Gnosticism) performs self-deconstruction — questioning the legitimacy of all these frameworks themselves.
Confucianism provides order. But order alone is not enough. Order needs to be internally understood by individuals (Buddhism), needs a metaphysical foundation (Vedanta), needs inviolable bottom lines (theology), needs the courage to fight darkness (Zoroastrianism), and ultimately needs the honesty to question itself (Gnosticism).
All seven volumes together make the complete Cyber Dharma.
子曰:“志于道,据于德,依于仁,游于艺。” ——《论语·述而》
The Master said: “Set your heart on the Dao, base yourself on De, lean on ren, and swim in the arts.”
Aspiration in the Dao (the ideal of systems architecture). Grounding in De (intrinsic alignment). Reliance on ren (concern for others). And the concrete realization — in craft (engineering practice).
This passage from twenty-five centuries ago could serve, almost verbatim, as the mission statement for an AI Alignment research program.
